4 Festive Must-Visit Regensburg Christmas Markets (2026)

If you only have one day to visit Regensburg Christmas Markets in Germany, you need a plan that doesn’t involve too much backtracking or struggling from bratwurst overload. We spent a December day there—just me, my husband, my mom, and my sister—as part of a river cruise and I can promise that the logistics work if you map it all out. We split the day between the Lucrezia Market, the Regensburg Christmas Market on Neupfarrplatz, and Adventsmarkt in Katharinespital, then saved the Romantic Christmas Market at Thurn und Taxis for the evening. A quick tip: always check opening dates and times before you go. These markets have schedules, and nobody wants to show up at a ghost market.

To make the most of your time and soak in all the festive energy, here’s everything you need to know before checking out the must-visit Regensburg Christmas Markets. I’ve included the opening dates, hours, exact locations, websites, and what each market is best known for so you can plan the perfect winter day in Regensburg, Germany.

Overview: Visit Regensburg Christmas Markets

We mapped out the must-visit Regensburg Christmas Markets pretty strategically. We kicked things off at the Lucrezia Market for a relaxing morning of browsing arts and crafts before heading to the Regensburg Christmas Market on Neupfarrplatz for lunch and mulled wine. In the afternoon, we crossed the Stone Bridge to check out Adventsmarkt in Katharinespital, then wrapped up the night at the Romantic Christmas Market at Thurn und Taxis, which was hands-down the highlight.

1. Lucrezia Christmas Market

Dates: November 27 – December 23, 2026
Hours: Sunday to Thursday 11 am – 8 pm. Friday and Saturday 11 am – 9 pm
Location: Haidplatz and Kohlenmarkt
Website: Here

Christmas Market Vibe: Artsy, crafty, and more atmospheric than your average bratwurst row.

What to Expect: Lucrezia Market is located in two connected squares, Haidplatz and Kohlenmarkt, which are just a couple-minute walk apart. Out of all the places to visit Regensburg Christmas Markets, this one wins for handmade gifts. I found beeswax candles shaped like animals and votives with intricate patterns, plus ceramics, jewelry, and even paper art.

Food here was more of a supporting act, but there was always glühwein (which should count as a food group in December) and a few other options to keep you going. We hit this one right when it opened in the morning, which worked well; it was quiet, and the backdrop of Regensburg’s colorful architecture makes it really photogenic.

2. Regensburg Christmas Market on Neupfarrplatz (Regensburger Christkindlmarkt)

Dates: November 23 – December 23, 2026
Hours: Sunday to Wednesday 10 am to 8 pm; Thursday to Saturday 10 am to 9 pm
Location: Neupfarrplatz
Website: Here

Christmas Market Vibe: Traditional Bavarian wintry fun, right in the city’s heart.

What to Expect: This market is the centerpiece when you visit Regensburg Christmas Markets. Located in Neupfarrplatz and set against the Neupfarrkirche, it has a rich history. It’s considered the city’s oldest market and has been a staple for centuries.

Food is where the market really shines. Stalls serve everything from sausages and chocolatey crepes to mini pancakes and roasted chestnuts. My personal highlight? Blueberry mulled wine, which I didn’t even know was a thing until this trip, and apple mulled wine, which is basically hot cider with a Bavarian twist. If you can, plan to be here around lunchtime.

Beyond the food, you’ll also find stalls selling holiday gear like ornaments, nutcrackers, nativity scenes, and winter wear. My husband and I ended up buying fuzzy gloves here, which immediately became part of our Christmas market survival strategy for the rest of the trip.

3. Adventsmarkt in Katharinespital

Dates: November 23 – December 23, 2026
Hours: Monday-Friday 4pm-10pm, Saturday 11am-10pm, Sunday 11am-9pm
Location: Am Brückenfuß
Website: Here

Christmas Market Vibe: Cozy and local with a side of panoramic charm courtesy of the Stone Bridge and cathedral view.

What to Expect: Tucked just over the Stone Bridge, the Adventsmarkt gives you get that classic skyline shot of Regensburg as your backdrop while you enjoy the market. There’s a relaxed, community feel here, like you’ve stumbled into the city’s favorite winter hangout. It’s also a convenient stop if you’re exploring on foot from the Old Town.

For a market its size, the food choices punch above their weight. I wasn’t there at mealtime, so I stuck with a bag of gebrannte Nuss (candied nuts), which I fully intended to save for later but somehow disappeared before I crossed back over the bridge. If you do catch it at lunch or dinner, the soup and bratwurst options looked tempting enough to make me regret my “light snack” strategy.

Locals hang here to catch up over food and a few glühweins, and it does feel like one of the more relaxed spots if you’re visiting multiple places. We arrived in the afternoon, and it did get busy; at one point, the crowd bottlenecked between stalls, which turned into a slow shuffle. But even with the bustle, I’d still recommend stopping by to check it out.

4. Romantic Christmas Market at Thurn und Taxis

Dates: November 20- December 23, 2026 (closed November 22)
Hours: Monday-Thursday 3pm-9pm, Friday 3pm-10pm, Saturday 2pm-10pm, Sunday 2pm-9pm
Location: Schloss St. Emmeram, Thurn und Taxis
Website: Here

Christmas Market Vibe: Medieval fairytale, fire-lit comfort, and the occasional alpaca cameo.

What to Expect: I saved the best for last: this is the market where romance meets history, and if I had to recommend just one place to visit Regensburg Christmas Markets, it would be this one. Held inside the courtyard of Thurn und Taxis Palace, it feels like stepping back in time. There’s an entry fee to get in, but the setting alone makes it a must-visit. Ticket prices vary by age and day, plus there are special discounts. Check out up-to-date ticket prices here.

You’ll find artisans creating and selling their work right in front of you; there are glassblowers shaping ornaments and woodworkers carving toys. The Arts & Crafts Village is where you’ll want to linger, especially if you’re looking for unique holiday gifts. It’s Christmas shopping and live entertainment in one.

At the market, one of the quirkiest surprises was seeing the alpacas. They were a hit with kids (and honestly, me too). It added a playful, unexpected twist to the palace setting. You don’t usually expect to sip glühwein while saying hi to a fluffy alpaca, but I’m not complaining.

The food here is next level. Massive fire pits are set up throughout the market, not just for warmth but for cooking. Salmon smokes on wooden planks and the scent of fresh nuts drifts through the air. Bring an appetite…you’ll want to try a lot of different food here. My recommendation? Come with friends and buy a bunch of different food to split.

Pro tip: I recommend arriving before sunset so you can explore in daylight and watch the market transform as the lights come on. Start with a bag of candied nuts while browsing the artisan stalls, then grab dinner and settle in by one of the fires in the courtyard as the sun goes down.

After dinner, take a walk beyond the main courtyard. The palace grounds are beautiful at night, with paths lit by string lights and a lake reflecting the glow. There’s even a gazebo in the park, which makes for a quiet, romantic break from the bustle inside. Ending your visit here feels like closing your Christmas market day on a perfect high note.

Where to Stay in Regensburg, Germany

Here are my recommendations on where to stay when visiting the must-visit Regensburg Christmas Markets:

  1. Bohemian Hotel for a charming, historic hotel in the heart of Old Town Regensburg.
  2. Elements Hotel for a boutique hotel stay with modern amenities.

If you only have one day in Regensburg, mapping out your visit in advance is key. Visit Regensburg Christmas Markets with a plan and you’ll end with a full stomach, frozen fingers, and a camera roll that might outnumber your annual photo output. I loved the creative sparkle of Lucrezia, the traditional kick of Neupfarrplatz, and the local-down-to-earth vibe of Katharinespital, but the real highlight was the Romantic Market at Thurn und Taxis. Just check those opening times, layer up, and get yourself in the holiday spirit.
