1 Day in Singapore Itinerary: Plan Your Perfect Trip

If you have a long layover in Southeast Asia, turn it into a mini trip. This 1 day in Singapore itinerary is exactly what we did in January when my friend and I stopped here on our way home from Thailand (we had 30 hours so a full day and a night in Singapore), and it was one of the best decisions of the vacation. This Singapore layover plan is great for first-time visitors: it minimizes backtracking, hits the city’s highlights, and incorporates many of Singapore’s most iconic photo locations.

We packed a lot into our day in Singapore, but nothing felt rushed thanks to how easy it is to get around. From waterfalls inside an airport to neon-lit gardens at night, this city really knows how to show off. If you’re debating whether it’s worth scheduling a day in Singapore during your Southeast Asia trip, I’m telling you right now: yes. Go ahead and book that layover!

Map: 1 Day in Singapore Itinerary

Here is your cheat sheet for how to spend one day in Singapore. Within the interactive map below, purple stars correspond to the attractions I mention in the post and teal bed icons correspond to my hotel recommendations.

1. Changi Jewel: Rain Vortex, Mirror Maze, Canopy Park
2. Haji Lane
3. Tan Teng Niah
4. Fort Canning Park: Fort Canning Tree Tunnel, Sang Nila Utama Garden
5. Peranakan Houses
6. Gardens by the Bay: Flower Dome & Cloud Forest, Viewpoints, Garden Rhapsody Light Show

1. Changi Jewel

Our 1 day in Singapore technically started the second we landed at Singapore Changi Airport early in the morning on our AirAsia flight from Phuket. We had a full-day layover, so we had an entire day and night before our flight back to the USA the next morning. After landing, we dropped our bags at luggage storage and headed straight into the Jewel. If you can swing a long layover here, I would 100% recommend it.

Jewel Rain Vortex

To begin your day in Singapore, the Rain Vortex is your first big wow moment. I went into full photographer mode trying to find the best angle. My favorite spot was on the platform between levels 2 and 3 near Adidas (on Level 2) and Sanook Kitchen (on Level 3). At night, they do light and music showcases that turn the waterfall into a full production, so check the timing before you go. Even in the morning, it was easily one of the coolest things we saw on our Singapore layover.

The Rain Vortex is the world’s tallest indoor waterfall, cascading down seven stories inside a glass dome, and it is absolutely stunning even though you’re standing in the middle of an airport. The water drops from the roof into a lush forest below. If you only have time to visit one spot in the airport, make sure it is the Rain Vortex!

Mirror Maze

The Mirror Maze at Jewel was way more entertaining than I expected on our Singapore layover. It’s exactly what it sounds like: a maze of mirrors that make you question your depth perception and your life choices. Do not try to run through it unless you want to run bang smack into a mirror at full speed.

Canopy Park

At the top level (Level 5) of Jewel, Canopy Park was a nice break from airport chaos and a fun addition to our itinerary. I loved the Petal Garden, which was filled with floral displays that almost didn’t look real. The Topiary Walk was also a ton of fun with its oversized, animal-shaped hedges. It’s playful and a little quirky.

2. Haji Lane

If you’re craving a break from Singapore’s ultra-modern vibe, catch a Grab (Southeast Asia’s version of Uber) over to Haji Lane, which feels like a completely different city. Think colorful murals, indie boutiques, and cute little cafes.

We popped into a few shops, took photos in front of the graffiti walls, and pretended we were cooler than we actually are. The vibe here is young and creative, and it’s a great contrast to the sleek vibes that you get in a lot of Singapore.

3. Tan Teng Niah

On our 1 day in Singapore itinerary, Tan Teng Niah was a quick stop. Little India itself is full of markets, restaurants, and spice shops, so even a short wander adds a different vibe to your day. If you have time, sign up for a Walking Tour of Little India, Chinatown, and Arab Street to really soak up the vibes!

The House of Tan Teng Niah in Little India might be one of the most photographed buildings in Singapore, and for good reason. Built in 1900, it’s the last surviving Chinese villa in the area. Every inch is painted in bright reds, blues, yellows, and greens. Let me tell you…I was absolutely obsessed with how colorful everything was and could not stop taking photos!

4. Fort Canning Park

Fort Canning Park brings some unique history into your time in Singapore. The park has been everything from a Malay royal palace site to a British military base. Today, it’s a beautiful green space with walking paths, historical markers, and the occasional monitor lizard (this was honestly super shocking to me…I was definitely not prepared!)

We meandered down the trails, checking it all out. It’s a nice reset from the city. Plus, it’s nice and central, so it fits easily into a tight 1 day in Singapore itinerary. An easy pro travel tip? Make sure you download an eSim for your phone in advance so you can easily navigate around Singapore and order taxis via Grab.

Fort Canning Tree Tunnel

The Fort Canning Tree Tunnel staircase is the Instagram-famous spiral staircase surrounded by greenery, and yes, it’s worth the hype if you like cool photos. It’s definitely not a secret spot, so we waited in a quick line to snap a few photos. It’s a quick stop, but a fun one to slot into a 1 day Singapore itinerary.

Sang Nila Utama Garden

Within Fort Canning Park, Sang Nila Utama Garden felt more like it belonged in the jungles of Cambodia. We had the location to ourselves, which was nice after the Fort Canning Tree Tunnel. If you’re already in the park, this is an easy spot to swing by.

5. Peranakan Houses

The pastel-colored Peranakan houses in Joo Chiat are another unique stop on this Singapore itinerary. These traditional houses reflect the Peranakan culture, which blends Chinese and Malay influences, and they’re famous for their pretty facades.

We wandered down the street snapping photos. You can see why it’s one of my favorite Instagram spots in Singapore! For the best photos, have your photographer stand across the street, zoom in just a bit, and then shoot between traffic.

6. Gardens by the Bay

When I envisioned my Singapore itinerary, I knew it had to include Gardens by the Bay. This massive waterfront park is over 250 acres and sits right next to Marina Bay, with unreal views of the Singapore skyline. The Supertrees are the main attraction, and are towering vertical gardens that look straight out of the future. Even just walking around the outdoor areas is impressive and completely free (my favorite!)

Viewpoints

If you’re following this 1 day in Singapore itinerary, let me tell you some of my favorite viewpoints from the afternoon and evening. The Park is huge, so it’s helpful to have a plan on what you want to see.

First, head to the lily pond for those views of Marina Bay Sands. The reflection in the water makes it look even more dramatic. It’s calm, slightly less chaotic than other areas, and one of my favorite photo spots from our Singapore adventure.

For a different perspective, climb up to the second-story walkway in the park for elevated views of the Supertrees. This angle gave me one of my favorite shots of the Supertrees during our afternoon exploring the area. Seeing the Supertrees from above adds depth you don’t get from ground level, and it is also way less crowded up top.

If you want something more classic, the Singapore Flyer viewpoint delivers. From certain spots in the park and along the water, you can frame the Flyer with the Supertrees, which is just quintessential Singapore. We grabbed some shots walking around during the afternoon and then again in the evening as the second light show started.

The boardwalk is another must on your 1 day in Singapore itinerary. From here, you get sweeping views of Marina Bay Sands on one side and the Supertrees and Singapore Flyer on the other. We walked it slowly, stopping way too often for photos.

Flower Dome & Cloud Forest

If you have extra time in your 1 day in Singapore itinerary, the conservatories at Gardens by the Bay are supposed to be incredible. The Flower Dome and Cloud Forest are attractions that people rave about. We skipped both because we were short on time during our time in Singapore, but they’re firmly on my list for next time!

Garden Rhapsody Light Show

The Garden Rhapsody light show at Gardens by the Bay was easily one of the highlights of our 1 day in Singapore itinerary. Shows typically run at 7:45 PM and 8:45 PM nightly, and you’ll want to grab your spot well in advance because it gets crowded fast. We laid on the ground with everyone else, staring straight up as the Supertrees lit up in sync with music.

By this point just before the show, we were absolutely starving. In a very on-brand American move, we grabbed McDonald’s and ate Big Macs while waiting for the show to start. I usually pride myself on trying local food, but hunger won that night. Honestly, eating fries under glowing Supertrees was a really fun memory from our day in Singapore, and I have zero regrets.

Where to Stay in Singapore

Here are my recommendations on where to stay on your 1 night in Singapore:

  1. Marina Bay Sands for the most iconic Singapore hotel with stunning views.
  2. Raffles Singapore for the best ultra-luxury hotel in Singapore.
  3. Mercure Singapore Bugis for a great value hotel in central location.
  4. Mandarin Oriental, Singapore for best views of Marina Bay.
  5. The Warehouse Hotel, Singapore for best boutique hotel with industrial‑chic vibes.
