Visiting Khao Sok National Park in Thailand: 14 Important Things to Know

Khao Sok National Park is one of those magical places that you almost don’t believe is real until you’re there—like stepping into the background of a nature documentary, but with more mosquitoes and humidity. Famous for its jaw-dropping limestone cliffs, serene Cheow Lan Lake, and abundant wildlife, visiting Khao Sok National Park is an experience like no other. I visited in January with a friend, and it was the perfect break from Thailand city chaos.

If you’re trying to plan an epic Thailand bucket list trip, visiting Khao Sok National Park is the kind of experience that you absolutely cannot miss. Lucky for you, I have all sorts of tips so that you can plan ahead and maximize your time in this natural wonderland without adding unnecessary stress. Here’s everything I wish I’d known before visiting Khao Sok National Park.

1. Best Time for Visiting Khao Sok National Park

The dry season, from November to April, is the best time for visiting Khao Sok National Park. This is when the weather is more likely to cooperate. We visited in January, and it was perfection—warm days, cooler mornings, and not a single monsoon to ruin our plans. That said, it does get toasty during the day, so pack light, breathable clothes. We also did get a quick rain shower, but it didn’t rain for long, and we were able to resume our adventures quickly!

2. Where to Visit Within Khao Sok National Park

When visiting Khao Sok National Park, you’ll need to decide between Cheow Lan Lake and Khao Sok Village. Personally, we went all-in on the lake, and I couldn’t recommend it more. Cheow Lan Lake is the star of the show, with its floating bungalows, towering karsts, and endless Instagram opportunities.

Khao Sok Village, on the other hand, is more for those who want a jungle vibe with easier access to land-based activities. If you’ve got limited time, skip the village and focus your energy on the lake—it’s the kind of place that makes you feel like you’ve discovered a secret paradise.

3. How Long to Stay in Khao Sok National Park

Plan for at least two nights when visiting Khao Sok National Park. With all the logistics involved, one night doesn’t do it justice. We arrived at our floating bungalow around 1 p.m. on the first day after taking a longtail boat from the main dock, and we left at 10 a.m. on day three. For our return, our boat got us back to the main dock by 11:15 a.m., and our transfer to Phuket took another three hours, landing us there around 2:30 p.m. It’s a lot of moving parts, so having that extra night gives you more time to relax and actually enjoy the park.

Depending on where you’re travelling from, keep in mind that you may lose more of the first and last days to travel. The journey from the dock to your accommodation is part of the experience—the boat ride give you plenty of time to admire the scenery. With two nights, you’ll have at least one full day to explore Cheow Lan Lake, go on a wildlife safari, and enjoy the unique charm of your floating bungalow. Make sure to bring a book or Kindle to fully unwind! Anything less, and you’ll feel like you’re in a rush to cram it all in.

4. Can You Visit Khao Sok as a Day Trip?

While you may technically try visiting Khao Sok National Park as a day trip, I wouldn’t recommend it. Between the travel time to Cheow Lan Lake, the boat transfer, and any activities you try to squeeze in, your entire day would feel like a logistical marathon. You’d barely have time to appreciate the incredible scenery or enjoy any of the unique experiences that make the park so special.

If you’re going to make the effort to visit Khao Sok, give yourself some time—it’s the only way to truly enjoy it without feeling rushed. However, if you do decide to opt for a day trip, this was the most highly rated day trip I found: Khao Sok National Park Jungle Safari Full Day Tour from Phuket.

5. Can You Visit Khao Sok Without a Tour?

For Cheow Lan Lake, visiting without a tour is nearly impossible. The lake is only accessible by boat, and unless you have your own longtail boat (I didn’t and I’m guessing you probably don’t either), you’ll need to book a tour or a package through your accommodation. Most floating bungalows include transportation to and from the dock as part of different packages they offer, which makes things much easier. While you could potentially try to piece everything together on your own, going through a tour or resort ensures you’ll have a hassle-free experience—and more time to soak in the stunning views.

6. Top Things to Do in Khao Sok National Park

Exploring Cheow Lan Lake is the highlight of visiting Khao Sok National Park. The towering limestone cliffs and emerald waters are so surreal. Kayaking through the calm waters is an amazing way to experience the beauty up close, especially if you enjoy a bit of solitude. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can opt for a guided jungle hike, though we skipped this in favor of spending more time on the lake.

A wildlife safari by boat is another must-do. As the sun sets, the lake takes on an almost magical glow, and we spotted plenty of birds flitting through the trees. We even saw monkeys and something that looked suspiciously like a water buffalo hanging out by the shore (I’m still not sure what that was…). After all that excitement, nothing beats swimming right off your floating bungalow or indulging in a lakeside massage. It’s the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation.

7. How to Get Around Khao Sok

Getting around Khao Sok National Park is all about longtail boats. These are your main mode of transportation, from transferring to your accommodation to exploring Cheow Lan Lake. Keep in mind that your luggage will likely be piled up at the front of the boat while you sit at the back, so pack anything that needs to stay dry in a waterproof dry bag. The boats can get wet, so prepare to embrace the occasional splash—it’s all part of the adventure.

We had a particularly memorable ride when the motor on our longtail boat fell off and sank to the bottom of the (very deep) lake. After some frantic waving with our lifejackets, another boat came to the rescue, and a new motor was installed. Mishaps aside, the longtail boats offer a unique way to experience the park.

8. What to Consider for Accommodations in Khao Sok

Accommodations in Khao Sok National Park are generally rustic, so it’s important to know what to expect before you book. Many places don’t have air conditioning, and even those that do usually only run it at night. If you’re someone who needs their creature comforts, splurging on a place with modern amenities can make a huge difference.

Another factor to consider is how far your accommodation is from the main dock. Some floating bungalows are tucked away in more secluded parts of the lake, which adds travel time but also gives you a quieter experience. Check if your stay includes meals, tours, and/or transportation to your accommodations, as this simplifies logistics and ensures you get the full experience without worrying about extra costs.

9. Where to Stay in Khao Sok National Park

We stayed at 500 Rai Floating Resort after a TON of research, and I can confidently say it was worth every baht. Yes, it’s on the pricier side, but it offered so much more than just a place to sleep—it was an experience in itself. From arranging our transportation to ensuring we had a seamless stay, 500 Rai took care of all the details. The rooms faced the sunrise, which meant we woke up every morning to the soft glow of the sun over the lake—a view I’ll never forget.

Located on a secluded section of Cheow Lan Lake, 500 Rai gave us the perfect balance of tranquility and adventure. The food was incredible, with both Thai and Western options at every meal. I had a great time exploring local flavors, though I’d probably pass on the fish balls if I had to do it again. The resort also included a floating pool in the middle of the lake, activities like kayaking and safaris, and even in-room Thai massages. We booked a package that covered meals and excursions, which made everything so much easier to plan. I’d highly recommend this route if it is in your budget!

The bungalows themselves were adorable and surprisingly comfortable for a “floating” experience. You can choose rooms with air conditioning (we did), and some even offer 24-hour AC, which is a lifesaver in the heat. Internet and phone access were limited, but honestly, I didn’t miss it—it was nice to fully unplug for a few days. This is my absolute #1 recommendation on where to stay when visiting Khao Sok National Park!

10. Is a Floating Bungalow Worth It?

Absolutely—staying in a floating bungalow is one of the most unique and memorable parts of visiting Khao Sok National Park. Waking up to the sunrise over Cheow Lan Lake is pure magic. There’s something incredibly peaceful about being surrounded by nothing but water and limestone cliffs, with no traffic or city noise to distract you. Plus, jumping straight into the lake for a swim from your back porch? Unbeatable! Just make sure to do your research—while 500 Rai was amazing, not all floating accommodations in Khao Sok offer the same level of comfort or service.

11. What to Wear When Visiting Khao Sok National Park

You’ll want quick-drying, lightweight clothing when visiting Khao Sok National Park. I basically lived in bathing suits layered with Columbia fishing shirts during the day—they’re not glamorous, but they’re great for sun protection and dry really quickly!

For dinner, I packed casual sundresses and shorts since the dining areas were open-air and breezy. Leave anything fancy at home—this is a “flip-flops and messy buns” kind of place, not “heels and a hairdryer.”

12. Useful Things to Pack for Khao Sok National Park

Packing strategically can make visiting Khao Sok National Park much more enjoyable. A waterproof dry bag is a must for keeping your electronics and valuables safe during boat rides—splashes are inevitable, and sometimes the rain likes to make an uninvited appearance (which happened on our boat ride during “dry season”). Insect repellent is another non-negotiable unless you enjoy being a buffet for mosquitoes. Sunscreen is essential too, as the sun can be relentless, especially when you’re out on the lake.

A good pair of water-resistant hiking sandals or shoes is helpful for jungle treks or navigating wet docks. Don’t forget a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated and a headlamp or flashlight for navigating at night (some accommodations can be pretty dark after sundown).

13. Is Khao Sok National Park Worth Visiting?

Yes—visiting Khao Sok National Park is 100% worth it. Even though it’s a bit off the beaten path and getting there can feel like solving a logistical puzzle, I’d absolutely recommend visiting Khao Sok National Park on your Thailand trip. Between the stunning lake, dramatic limestone cliffs, and incredible wildlife, experiencing it all in person is something special. It’s one of those places that stays with you long after you’ve left, and every bit of effort to get there is worth it.

14. How to Combine Khao Sok with Other Destinations

Khao Sok pairs well with other top destinations in southern Thailand for an epic jungle-and-beach adventure. We started our adventure in Northern Thailand in Chiang Rai and Chaing Mai before hopping on an AirAsia flight to southern Thailand and venturing to Phang Nga Bay. After visiting Phang Nga Bay, we headed to Khao Sok and then wrapped up our trip in Phuket. The transfers to and from Khao Sok, which we booked through 500 Rai, made hopping between locations stress-free.

You can also combine Khao Sok with Krabi, Koh Samui, or Railay Beach if you’re craving more island time. The park’s location in southern Thailand makes it easy to include in a multi-stop itinerary. Whether you’re coming from the beaches or heading to them after your jungle stay, visiting Khao Sok National Park makes for a perfect, nature-filled detour.
