2 Days in Edinburgh Itinerary: Explore Scotland’s Vibrant Capital

Planning your 2 days in Edinburgh itinerary but don’t want to spend hours glued to Google Maps, trying to figure out if you’re walking in circles? I’ve got you covered! In this guide, I’ll take you through what to do in Edinburgh in two days, including the must-sees and quaint spots around town. Day 1: Iconic Streets, Castles, and Hidden Gems

1. Victoria Street

Kick off your 2 days in Edinburgh itinerary with the most colorful, curvy street in town. It’s basically Harry Potter meets a rainbow. But here’s the key: go early, or you’ll be swimming in a sea of tourists. We went around 6:30 a.m., and it was magical! By the time we found ourselves back there around 2 p.m., it was absolutely mobbed. Early birds really do get the best photos (and it is way easier to enjoy the sights that way!)

2. Ross Fountain/ Edinburgh Castle

Next up, head over to see Ross Fountain in all its gold-trimmed glory, with the stunning Edinburgh Castle looming above. We went pretty early to get the views all to ourselves – no photobombers!

After that, make your way up to Edinburgh Castle, which opens at 9:30 a.m. (but always check for updated times here). You’ll want to set aside about two hours to explore the castle—it’s packed with history, stunning views, and maybe even a ghost or two if you’re lucky!

3. Scott Monument

Next up, visit the Scott Monument, a towering Victorian Gothic tower which offers panoramic views of central Edinburgh and beyond. But be prepared for a bit of a workout—there are 287 steps to the highest viewing platform! The good news? It’ll justify all the food you’re about to eat on this Edinburgh adventure.

4. Lunch at Duck & Waffle

You’ll need to refuel, so find a cozy spot for lunch. Whether you go classic Scottish with some haggis or opt for a plate of comfort food, you can’t go wrong. Plus, it’s a great excuse to sit down after all that castle viewing and stair climbing.

7. Dean Village

Take a short walk to Dean Village, where time seems to have stood still. Think ancient stone houses, winding streets, and a peaceful river that flows through it all. It’s so tranquil you’ll forget that Edinburgh’s bustling city center is just minutes away.

8. Vennel Viewpoint

Want the ultimate castle view? Head to Vennel Viewpoint for a postcard-perfect shot of Edinburgh Castle. Surprisingly, when we visited around 2 pm, the viewpoint wasn’t as crowded as I had pictured. There were a few people around, but with a bit of patience, you can easily snag that perfect shot. To be fair, we visited Edinburgh in April so we weren’t there peak summer, but I was definitely happily surprised.

9. Dog House

Time to reward yourself with a drink. Dog House is an eclectic bar with quirky decor and a fun drink selection. I’m a Harry Potter lover and wanted to visit after hearing that they had the best butterbeer in town. I have now drank butterbeer a total of 1 time (at Dog House), so I don’t feel qualified to say that it is the best, but I can attest that it was good!

10. Dinner at the Cellar Door

Wrap up your day with a hearty meal at the Cellar Door, which serves classic Scottish dishes with a twist. Whether you’re craving local dishes or something a bit more international, Edinburgh’s got you covered.

Day 2: Royal Mile, Literary Landmarks, and Scenic Views

1. Royal Mile

Start your second day by walking the iconic Royal Mile, a historic stretch that takes you from Edinburgh Castle to Holyrood Palace. To enjoy this bustling street without the crowds and traffic, aim to visit early in the morning. You’ll get a more peaceful experience and better photos of the charming architecture.

If you prefer a more in-depth exploration (like large bagpipe bands), return later in the day for one of the many tours available like the Royal Mile Guided Walking Tour in Edinburgh. Either way, the Royal Mile is a must-see on your 2 days in Edinburgh itinerary. We stopped by first thing in the morning and also came back later in the day to enjoy the band and street performers – I’d recommend checking it out at both times of day for the full experience!

2. Tweeddale Court

Take a detour into Tweeddale Court, a hidden alleyway where time seems to stand still. This tucked-away gem is a quick little stop and won’t take much time out of your itinerary!

3. Bakehouse Close

Outlander fans, rejoice! Bakehouse Close is where Jamie’s print shop scenes were filmed. (If you can’t tell yet, I’m a huge book nerd and LOVE all of the spots that have literary ties or even look like they may have literary ties.) Even if you’re not into time-traveling romance, this spot has that old-world charm. It’s another must-see quick spot on your 2 days in Edinburgh itinerary.

4. Tolbooth Tavern

Time for a pit stop at the Tolbooth Tavern, one of Edinburgh’s oldest pubs. This historic spot wasn’t just a watering hole; it was once a bustling center for collecting tolls from travelers entering the city. Whether you decide to stop in for a drink or just want to snap a quick pic, it’s worth it to swing by the tavern.

5. Writer’s Museum

Pay homage to Scotland’s literary legends at the Writer’s Museum. Robert Burns, Sir Walter Scott, and Robert Louis Stevenson all get their due here. It’s not only a great cultural stop, but it is also super picturesque on the outside —a perfect stop on your 2 days in Edinburgh itinerary.

6. School of Divinity

Marvel at the architecture of the School of Divinity, which looks straight out of a Gothic novel. Even if theology isn’t your thing, the building itself is a stunner and is absolutely worth a visit.

7. Ramsay Garden

Next up, head to Ramsay Garden, a cluster of houses that adds a pop of color to your Edinburgh adventure. While there might not be a deep historical story behind these buildings, their aesthetic appeal is undeniable. It’s a perfect spot for a quick photo op and plus, it’s conveniently close to your previous stop, making it an easy addition to your 2 days in Edinburgh itinerary.

8. Lunch at The Edinburgh Larder

By now, you’ve earned a good meal. Whether you pick a cozy café or a bustling restaurant, take the time to enjoy some local eats. Maybe even throw in a dessert—you’ve walked enough to deserve it! Plus, I’ve heard calories don’t count on vacation…right?

9. Museum Context

Calling all Harry Potter fans! Museum Context is a shop dedicated to the Wizarding World, filled with magical merch. Even if you don’t buy anything, it’s fun to wander through and pretend you’re in Diagon Alley. I was absolutely in my happy place here! It’s also the perfect place to stop while it is rainy to wait out any of those Scottish rainstorms.

10. Greyfriar’s Kirkyard

Next up, make your way to Greyfriars Kirkyard, a historic 16th-century cemetery that is rumored to have inspired some of the names in Harry Potter! As you wander through the ancient tombstones, keep an eye out for the graves of Thomas Riddell and William McGonagall—both names are said to have influenced characters in the books. Let me tell you that I seriously nerded out when I found the gravestones. There are a few other connections to the book, as well, so you’ll want to keep your eyes peeled!

11. Calton Hill

For panoramic views of the city, make your way up Calton Hill. It’s the perfect spot to capture Edinburgh in all its glory. The climb is worth it, especially as you near the end of your 2 days in Edinburgh itinerary. We climbed up during the late afternoon, but I think that sunset would have been ideal. We had rain in the forecast for the evening, so we figured that seeing it during the afternoon was better than not seeing it at all!

12. Dinner at Makars Mash Bar

End your day with a delicious dinner. After all the history and walking, a great meal is the perfect way to wrap up your whirlwind 2 days in Edinburgh adventure.

Day Trips from Edinburgh

If you have extra time, consider extending your 2 days in Edinburgh itinerary with a day trip!

1. Glenfinnan Viaduct

The Glenfinnan Viaduct, aka the bridge with the “Harry Potter train,” is only a couple of hours from Edinburgh. It’s where the Hogwarts Express crosses in the films, and seeing the train wind through the Scottish Highlands is nothing short of magical. Make sure you time your visit with the crossing of the Hogwarts Express to capture the magic at level 10/10.

2. Scottish Highlands & Loch Ness

Dive into the magic of the Scottish Highlands with a full-day Loch Ness, Scottish Highlands, Glencoe and Pitlochry Tour. I was obsessed with Glencoe – it was made famous from James Bond’s “Skyfall” movie. Of course, no trip is complete without a visit to the legendary Loch Ness—keep an eye out for Nessie! Sadly, there was no sign of Nessie when we visited, but maybe you’ll have better luck than me.

3. Loch Lomond & Stirling Castle

Head out on a day trip on the Loch Lomond, Stirling Castle and the Kelpies Tour. Stirling Castle is one of Scotland’s most significant historical sites and lets you immerse yourself in Scotland’s past. Afterward, head to Loch Lomond, where you can soak in the scenic landscapes. There were very few people when we visited the loch, which made for a nice relaxing visit!

Where to Stay in Edinburgh, Scotland

Located just minutes from the Royal Mile, this boutique hotel is part of the city’s iconic skyline.
