33 Destinations for Every Traveler Type: Discover Your Ideal Trip

When people ask me where they should travel next, the answer is almost never one place. It depends on what kind of traveler you are, and whether you want crazy adventure or a beach chair. That’s why I always come back to this idea of destinations for every traveler type. There’s no one-size-fits-all trip, and for me, that’s the fun of it.

Over the years, I’ve learned that the best trips happen when the destination matches your personality and what you’re looking to get out of a trip. Some people want to hike three miles before sunrise. Others want to sip a pina colada while staring at the ocean, and I’ve been in both camps depending on the trip. This guide is built around destinations for every travel style, based on places I’ve been and trips that stuck with me long after I got home.

Ocean Lover

Some trips are all about the water, and these destinations are perfect if your ideal day includes snorkeling, boat rides, and ending the afternoon a little bit salty:

  • Maldives: The Maldives is peak tropical escape energy. We stayed in an overwater bungalow on our honeymoon, and I still think about stepping straight from our deck into that unreal turquoise water.
  • Hawaii: Hawaii is perfect for ocean lovers who like their trip a bit more active. The snorkeling is incredible. When I visited, I came a bit too close to a blacktip reef shark, which had me swimming faster than an Olympic athlete! Add in the surfing and beautiful beaches, and it’s an easy win.
  • Grenada: Grenada completely surprised me. I visited on a Windstar cruise and the water was that perfect shade of blue you don’t quite believe is real. Snorkeling through the Underwater Sculpture Park felt unlike anywhere else I’ve been and made the island stand out from other Caribbean destinations.

Road Tripper

For travelers who love long stretches of scenic roads and spontaneous detours, these trips are a great fit:

  • Scotland: Scotland is one of my favorite road trip destinations. Start in Edinburgh, stop by Fort William to see the Hogwarts Express, and head to the Isle of Skye. Hiking the Old Man of Storr at sunrise was one of those moments that I’ll never forget. Glencoe Valley is unreal (make sure you stay at the stunning Inverlochy Castle Hotel!), and yes, we did look for Nessie at Loch Ness.
  • Iceland: Iceland has one of the most famous road trips for a reason. The Ring Road takes you past waterfalls, glaciers, black sand beaches, and landscapes that are just beautiful. You’ll pull over constantly, so plan extra time.
  • Oman: Oman is a quieter option but just as impressive. The roads are surprisingly easy to drive, and in a few days you can go from mosques to desert domes (we stayed at Starry Domes Desert Camp) to swimming in crystal-clear wadis.

Animal Lover

If you’re looking for inspiration for destinations for every traveler type and consider yourself an animal lover, these locations should be high on your list:

  • Tanzania: Tanzania is the big one. We went for the Great Migration of wildebeest, and seeing that in person is something you don’t forget. It’s chaotic and incredible all at once.
  • Costa Rica: Costa Rica is a bit more relaxed but just as fun. The rainforests are full of monkeys, sloths, and birds that look like they were designed by someone with a very colorful imagination. Plus, Costa Rica is where we got engaged, so it’ll always have a special place in my heart.
  • Saint Lucia: Saint Lucia mixes wildlife with ocean views. We went snorkeling and spotted an eel plus plenty of colorful little reef fish. The eel was a little startling, but it was a really cool destination to explore!

Sailing Buff

Some destinations are best explored from the water, and these are hard to beat for sailing:

  • Croatia: Croatia is just made for sailing! I loved hopping between towns like Hvar, Vis, Dubrovnik, and Rovinj. Each stop had its own vibe. Think blue caves, castles, old fortresses, and pastel colored buildings.
  • U.S. Virgin Islands: The U.S. Virgin Islands are perfect if you want variety. Between St. John and St. Thomas, we hiked, snorkeled, and spent our day on beaches like Trunk Bay. Watermelon Bay was one of my favorites for snorkeling.
  • Amalfi Coast, Italy: The Amalfi Coast is all about views. You’ll explore colorful towns like Positano, Sorrento, and Amalfi stacked along cliffs, with fishing boats drifting below. Imagine an evening on deck with an Aperol spritz. It really doesn’t get much better than that!
If you're looking for the best destinations for every traveler type and you're a sailor, these are the options for you.

Adventure Seeker

These places are for people who think “that looks terrifying,” but usually follow it up by “let’s do it anyway”:

  • Switzerland: Switzerland is a playground for adventure. Paragliding over Interlaken was one of the best things I’ve ever done, and you’ll have amazing views while doing it.
  • Turkey: Turkey offers one of the most unforgettable experiences out there. Hot air ballooning over Cappadocia at sunrise still ranks as one of my favorite travel moments of all time! It’s hard to top that view.
  • Brazil: Brazil gives you variety such a variety of adventurous activities. You can boat through the Amazon looking for the pink river dolphins, fish for piranhas with cane poles, adventure to the thundering Iguazu Falls, and then go hang gliding in Rio and land on a beach.

City Lover

These are the perfect spots if your dream trip involves great food, a somewhat chaotic vibe, and plenty of intriguing architecture:

  • Singapore: Singapore is clean, efficient, and full of great food. I recently visited with a friend and managed to fit in everything from rooftop views to hawker stalls. It’s also one of the easiest cities to navigate and oftentimes works as a long layover destination when traveling in Asia.
  • Lisbon, Portugal: Lisbon is all about the viewpoints and delicious food. I lost track of how much pastel de nata I ate, which I’m not mad about.
  • Chicago, Illinois: Chicago mixes architecture with lots of fun activities. Between comedy shows, a Cubs game, and wandering the Magnificent Mile, there’s always something going on.

Hiker

For travelers who plan their days around trail maps, early alarms, and a strong commitment to “just one more viewpoint,” these destinations for every traveler type are for you:

  • Canada: Banff and Yoho National Parks are hard to beat. We went to Lake Moraine at sunrise with our own kayak and had the water completely to ourselves before the main dock even opened. If you can swing it, I’d highly recommend taking a kayak before heading out for a day of hiking.
  • Guatemala: You can climb Acatenango, which is an overnight hike from Antigua up a volcano. Not up for a multi-day hike? Check out hiking Indian Nose at Lake Atitlan. It required a 3:30am wakeup and a trek up the mountain, but watching the sunrise at the top and seeing the lava from a volcano in the distance was a pretty cool experience.
  • Utah: Utah is packed with national parks like Arches, Canyonlands, Bryce, Zion, and Capitol Reef. Plus, you can go a bit more off-the-beaten path and hit up gems like the Great Chamber at Cutler Point. We’ve done multiple trips out to Utah, and you’ll soon discover that state parks are just as stunning at the national parks (and usually less crowded).

Cultural Connoisseur

If you travel to learn and enjoy a good foodie scene, these countries are rich with history, culture, and delicious dishes:

  • Thailand: Thailand offers stunning temples, with my favorites located around Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. Add in the food (pad see ew is to die for), and it’s an easy favorite.
  • Italy: From ancient ruins in Rome to places like Venice, there’s always something to learn, usually followed by some delicious pasta. I’ve been to Italy several times now, and it’s somewhere I know I’ll keep coming back to.
  • Morocco: Morocco is one of those places that completely pulls you into the experience. I loved wandering through the maze-like souks, visiting ornate madrasas, and ending the day with tea on a rooftop overlooking the medina.

Luxury Traveler

If you’re the type of traveler that goes all in for a trip, you’re a luxury traveler and these are the top trips for you:

  • Santorini: Santorini is the definition of dreamy Mediterranean luxury. We stayed in a whitewashed cave hotel overlooking the caldera, and watching the sunset from our terrace every night honestly made the trip. Between the cliffside villages, infinity pool, and catamaran cruise with rosé in hand, it’s hard not to feel slightly spoiled there.
  • St. Barts: Saint Barthélemy, or St. Barts is on another level. We visited while sailing through the Caribbean and spent our days spotting massive megayachts (and googling who the owners are), relaxing on gorgeous beaches, and wandering around the upscale harbor towns.
  • Dubai: Dubai is all about luxury at scale, where everything feels designed to impress. We went up the Burj Khalifa before dawn to watch the sun rise over the city, and the views were exactly as dramatic as you’d hope. Between the marina lined with yachts, the ultra-luxury hotels, and the nonstop “more is more” energy, Dubai doesn’t really do understated.

Nature Enthusiast

For travelers who feel most at home exploring the outdoors and marveling at natural wonders, these destinations are perfect for you:

  • Norway: Norway is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen, especially from the water. We explored the fjords by boat, and it’s truly the best way to appreciate just how dramatic the landscapes are.
  • Chile: Chile offers everything from the mountains in Patagonia to the Atacama Desert. Watching the Tatio Geysers at dawn with my sister while freezing and out of breath from the altitude is something I’ll never forget.
  • Finland: Finland, especially Lapland, is incredibly peaceful in the winter. Staying in a glass igloo and watching the Northern Lights from bed was one of those travel experiences that actually lived up to the hype.

History Buff

If you’re looking for destinations for every traveler type and love stepping back in time, these are my go-to recommendations for you:

  • Cambodia: Angkor Wat is one of the most unforgettable places I’ve ever visited. Watching sunrise over the temple complex in Cambodia is still one of my favorite travel moments ever. It starts very early, it’s crowded (so you should claim your spot well before sunrise for an unobstructed view), and somehow it still feels special once the sky starts to light up.
  • Egypt: Egypt goes even further back. The pyramids are the headline, but cruising the Nile on an old school dahabiya and visiting temples in Luxor and Abu Simbel add so much more. It’s one of those trips where you constantly feel like you’re standing inside a history book.
  • Jordan: Jordan is home to Petra, which definitely lives up to expectations and all of the Indiana Jones vibes you’d hope for. Walking through the narrow canyon and seeing it open up into a view of the Treasury is one of those moments that sticks with you.

No matter how you like to travel, there are truly epic destinations for every traveler type. The hardest part is narrowing it down, especially when your vacation days are limited! I usually start with the time of year I’d like to plan my trip and how many days I have and just go from there. The perfect destination looks different for everyone, which is exactly what makes travel so addictive.
