20 Photos that Prove Valparaiso, Chile is the Best Ever
This may not be breaking news, but I’m still going to say it. Valparaiso, Chile is one seriously colorful (and amazing) city!
For as long as I can remember, I’ve drooled over Pinterest-worthy images of the lively city with all of its vibrant murals, just counting down until I too could visit. And let me tell you, that day finally arrived, and we found the best photos in Valparaiso, Chile! It absolutely lived up to my ridiculous expectations and even surpassed them. My only regret? Not bringing about 5 outfits to spice up our photo shoot around the city…please excuse the same red dress in every single picture here.
I’d recommend reaching out to HecTour Services to help your plan the perfect day around Valparaiso. He provides personalized and flexible services based on you want to do, and what we wanted to do was enjoy all of the street murals and pretty views Valparaiso had to offer. Hector (our guide) drove my sister (Amy) and me around the city, up and down the crazy hills, and then acted as our own professional photographer for the day. So say hello to the city and our ridiculously fun photo shoot with the best photo spots in Valparaiso, Chile!
Valparaiso is known for its hills, so during our day in the city, we focused on spending time on a few particularly photogenic hills: Alegre, Concepcion, Panteon, Bellavista, Miraflores.
Make sure to take plenty of photos where you can interact with the murals. First of all, play the piano stairs…
…then flex your muscles to match this guy…
…kiss the miscellaneous murals on the street…
…and last but not least, mirror the lady in the mural!
In addition to the awesome murals, Valparaiso has a deep history as a port town, so find a promenade with views over the modern part of the city and the port.
Also, bonus points if you make friends with the neighborhood dogs. Most of the dogs you see on the streets are strays, and every one I met was incredibly sweet! They just want a bite to eat and a little love!
Valparaiso is also home to some of the most colorful doors I’ve ever seen…seriously, I might be in love. If there were a way to steal their doors, I would have…especially this red one here.
While you’re out and about, make sure to swing by Pablo Neruda’s house. We didn’t make it inside since we were doing a whirlwind tour of the city, but it’s supposedly decorated like a ship, so sounds pretty legit to check out!
Our guide knew about some of the coolest murals in the city, so we obviously spent some quality time checking those out and posing in various ways.
Apologies for our many awkward poses…you can tell we’re not models. We posed against lampposts…
…and on too-short fire hydrants…
…don’t forget about the casual walk down the street without tripping pose…
…and we posed on stairs. There are VERRRRY many places to take pictures around the city, so bring your most charming smile and favorite photographer!
Definitely pencil in some time to find the iconic cruise ship house…
…and snap a pic with the adorable yellow house while you’re at it.
All this walking should take you to a bar, so make sure you choose wisely!
Last but not least, bask in Valpo’s colorful alleys with delicious smells wafting through…
…snap a pic at my favorite mural in the city…
…and find the most vibrant street you can!
Logistics
Cheap Flights to Valparaiso:I’d recommend searching through eDreams. They scan tons of different travel discount sites and feature special flight deals. You can typically find good flights into Santiago. Make sure to arrange a shuttle in advance, or you can take the public bus if you’re looking to save some moolah.
Where to Stay in Valparaiso: Valparaiso has something for every budget. For the backpacker option, check out Muffin Hostel in the heart of the city. Fun fact: the building used to be a brothel, though fortunately for you it’s not anymore. It also has a rooftop terrace and breakfast included in the price of the room. For the hotel route, I’d recommend Winebox Hotel. The hotel is made out of recycled shipping containers (way cool!), plus offers 5 star service, and views of the sea. Embrace the combination of luxury and Valparaiso charm! If you’re traveling with friends, another good option here is to do a VRBO vacation rental. (Use my link for savings on your first stay!)
